What is an LED (Light Emitting Diode)?

An LED (Light Emitting Diode) is the most commonly used component in backlights. LEDs are
solid-state semiconductor devices that convert electrical energy directly into visible light. Two
semiconductor materials are joined such that when a current is passed through the LED, light and
heat are generated at the junction.
